Well styled hair, neat and stylish clothing, a good physique and gracious manners will convey just the right image about you. Smile and reveal stained or dirty teeth and the whole effect comes to naught. You can buy teeth whiteners and brush your teeth regularly to keep them sparkling white. You can just as well go in for homemade teeth whitening agents you can prepare at home. Here are a few recipes.

Baking powder

Baking powder contains bicarbonate of soda and monocalcium phosphate, monocalcium phosphate and cream of tartar or potassium bitartrate. In short it has the alkaline and acidic compounds in dry powder form. When water is added a chemical reaction takes place. You can use plain baking powder to brush your teeth and get them to whiten. You can make a paste for homemade teeth whitening this way:

  • Take coconut oil
  • Add baking powder until it forms a thick paste.
  • Store in plastic or glass jar in your fridge.

If you cannot get baking powder you can use baking soda for teeth, which is nothing but pure sodium bicarbonate. You can also use baking soda in a more effective way by adding a few drops of lemon juice to it just before you start brushing. However, do not use this mixture for a long time since acid in lemon juice erodes enamel. Just use it until the stains go away. A week should be sufficient.

Hydrogen peroxide

  • Take coconut oil, add some peppermint oil for flavor and taste.
  • To this mix add a few drops of mild solution of hydrogen peroxide (3%) and stir well.
  • Coconut oil is a natural teeth whitener since it has lauric acid that removes the yellow coating on teeth. Hydrogen peroxide is a natural bleach and germicide as well.
  • You can add some baking soda to this mix and get the benefit of all three ingredients.
  • If you use soda, then do not use the natural teeth whitening formulation for a long time. Without baking soda you can use it regularly for a couple of months.

Apple cider vinegar and baking soda

Obviously acetic acid in apple cider vinegar will react with sodium bicarbonate of baking soda so you cannot make a mix and store it. You will need to mix the two just before you brush your teeth. Apple cider whitens teeth naturally and is a perfect complement to baking soda for teeth whitening purposes.

Salt, baking soda and lemon juice

  • You can mix one part of salt with two parts of baking soda and store in a small plastic container.
  • Take a quarter teaspoonful in the palm of your hand and add a few drops of lemon juice.
  • Use immediately as a natural teeth whitener.

Coconut oil-turmeric rinse

Oil pulling is a good technique to keep teeth healthy but using this natural teeth whitener will show results only after a long time.

  • Add a quarter spoonful turmeric powder to two spoons of coconut oil and then swish this mixture around in your mouth for a couple of minutes.
  • Rinse and brush teeth as usual.
  • This practice kills bacteria and prevents teeth from decaying.

Use Ayurvedic formulation

Take one part amla powder, one part neem leaf powder, one part wood charcoal powder, one-fourth spoon of baheda powder and mix. This mixture is both mildly acidic and astringent, cleaning teeth as well as tightening gums.

Strawberries and acidic fruits as well as berries are natural cleansers of the plaque on your teeth. Just drinking lemon juice or orange juice also helps to prevent teeth from becoming stained. You could also try to eat curds to maintain oral health.
